Step 5: Spelling List Week 17: Open Syllables Open syllable pattern in recent. Draw a line between each syllable: re/cent. Say each syllable, then point out the open syllable re and the closed syllable cent. Demonstrate sorting the spelling words by pattern under the key words local and panic. Sort a few words. Point out that when the vowel sound is short, the syllable usually ends after the consonant. When the vowel sound is long, the syllable ends after the vowel.
